Under 18s Unsupervised Climbing

Young people aged between 14 and 17 can register for an assessment to climb unsupervised at our centre.

After passing a prebooked assessment to demonstrate you meet the required standards you can register with us to climb. Parental consent is required 14 and 15 year olds will need their parents to attend their visit to approve and complete the relevant risk forms.

Under 18 Rules and Restrictions

  • Under 18s may not use the cafe unless under the signed supervision of an adult member. The only exception is when the under 18 is a registered Junior Member of the Reach.
  • Under 18s may not use the Training Room.
  • Under 18s are not allowed to supervise others.

Bouldering only

14 & 15 year olds

16 & 17 year olds

  2. Complete an online form at home with their parent/guardian (the form must be signed together).
  3. A parent/ legal guardian must attend the first visit to complete acknowledgement of risks forms
  4. Please contact us before attending so we can check the form has been completed correctly
  5. Become bouldering member and climb without supervision

Top-Rope Assessment

14 to 17 year olds

  • Please contact us to book an assessment for 14-17 Year olds to become Top-Rope Members
  • Climbers must not climb or practice in the wall in the day before a Junior Member Assessment
  • Our Instructor will spend 20 mins (approx.) testing the climber's knowledge of knots, belaying, bouldering, auto-belays and general safety in the climbing wall. The climber will have to demonstrate detailed knowledge of the climbing checks, calls and safety systems.
  • They will also need to bring along a second climber happy to climb and simulate a fall. The instructor will assess the climber's ability to catch a falling climber and will expect the U18 climber's skills in belaying to surpass most adults after a 2 day rope course.

Lead Assessment

14 to 17 year olds

  • Please contact us to book an assessment for 14-17 Year olds to Lead Climb unsupervised
  • Climbers must not climb or practice in the wall in the day before a Junior Leading Assessment
  • To book an assessment, the junior member must have evidence of having regularly lead climbed and belayed for a minimum of 6 months
  • Our Climbing Wall Development instructor will spend a minimum of 40 mins testing all aspects of lead climbing, including belaying, climbing, clipping and catching/taking lead falls.
