U18 Unsupervised Climbing

Young people aged 14 to 17 can register to climb unsupervised at The Reach after completing a pre-booked assessment.

General Requirements

  • A parent or guardian must attend the first visit
  • Under 18s may not use the café without an accompanying adult (unless a Junior Member)
  • Under 18s may not use the Training Room
  • Under 18s may not supervise other climbers

Bouldering (Ages 14-17)

  1. Watch the bouldering induction video on our Bouldering Registration page
  2. A parent/guardian must attend the first visit to complete the registration

Top-Rope Assessment (Ages 14-17)

A 20-minute assessment testing your ability to:

  • Tie knots correctly
  • Belay safely
  • Use the bouldering area
  • Use the auto-belay system
  • Demonstrate general climbing safety awareness

You will need to bring a second climber to assist with fall simulation during the assessment.

Lead Assessment (Ages 14-17)

A 40-minute assessment for experienced young climbers. Requirements:

  • Minimum 6 months of regular lead climbing and belaying experience
  • Evidence of climbing ability (logbook, NICAS level, or instructor reference)

You will need to bring a second competent lead climber to climb with during the assessment.

Bouldering

Register for independent bouldering — no ropes needed.

Roped Climbing

Register for unsupervised roped climbing (top rope and lead).

Guest Supervision

Register to supervise guests at the wall.
