Can I climb at The Reach if I've never climbed before?

Anyone that wants to climb at The Reach needs:

either to book onto one of the following instructed sessions:

  • a Taster session
  • a Basic Skills course
  • a private tuition
  • a birthday party

or you can come with a friend who is an experienced climber and is registered at The Reach. To climb regularly at The Reach and to benefit from the lower members prices, we recommend you become a registered member yourself.

What do I need to do to register?

To become a registered climber at The Reach, you must know how to put on a harness correctly, tie-in with a climbing knot, and belay and lower-off a climber safely. You will need to fill in and sign the Registration form, pay the one-off membership fee and agree to the conditions of use of the climbing wall. You will then be able to do top-rope climbing and bouldering. If you have appropriate experience, you will also be able to lead.

If you have bouldered before and are familiar with the risks, but cannot tie-in or belay, you can register for bouldering only. This has a different registration form, but the membership fee, climbing charges and conditions of use of the climbing wall are the same as with 'full' registration.

Is equipment hire included in the entry cost?

If you are coming to climb without an instructor then we charge for equipment on top of the entrance fee (£3.00 for climbing shoes and £2.50 for a harness). However, all courses, parties and tuition with a Reach instructor include the cost of equipment.

What should I wear for climbing?

We recommend that you wear comfortable, casual clothing that will not restrict movement. Trousers and a T-shirt would be fine. Climbing shoes can be hired from reception if you do not have your own.

Rings should be removed prior to climbing as they can cause injury to fingers. We also advise that you do not wear bracelets or watches as these can get damaged.

Can I use the Training room?

Anyone over the age of 16 years can use the Training room. Improper use of the room can lead to serious injury, so please ask staff for advice if you are unsure of how to use this room safely. Alternatively you can book onto one of our Training Room sessions for more details on how to make the room work for you.

I've booked a place on a climbing course, but I can't make it. Can I cancel?

For basic skills courses, taster sessions and under-18 clubs, bookings are non-refundable.

For private tuition, parties, corporate or youth and school group bookings, cancellations made with less than 2 weeks notice incur a charge of 50% of the session fee; sessions cancelled or changed with less than 1 week's notice must be paid for in full.

How do I become a U18 member?

If you are between the ages of 14 and 17 you may climb unsupervised with your parent or guardian's consent provided you pass our U18's member's assessment. In the assessment you should be able to demonstrate to one of our instructors that you are capable of tying-in using a suitable knot, and that you can climb and belay safely. This assessment will need to be arranged in advance, but shouldn't take more than 20 minutes.

See here for more details and to download a parent consent form.

What is the minimum age that my child can climb with the Under 18s Club?

Seven years old.

See here for more information about climbing with children at The Reach.

How do I book a birthday party?

You can call us or email to book a party. Parties run for one and a half hours and can be arranged at any time within our opening hours - however, you will need to book in advance so that we can arrange for the necessary instructors. When you book you will need to pay a 50% deposit.

Are you open on bank holidays?

On Bank Holidays we operate to our Sunday opening times, from 10am until 7pm. However, we are closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New years Eve and New years Day.

Is there somewhere to park my car?

On the estate there is a designated car parking area, accessed by turning right just inside the front gates. There is also a loading bay directly outside our front door available for late night and weekend parking only. Please do not park in this area before 6pm during the week as lorries need to use this space.

Is there somewhere to park my bike?

There is a bike lock-up area inside the big roller doors to the right of the reception.
